About Buttonworks -
Buttonworks Australia is a family business owned and operated by Liz and Mike Murray, who began making wooden craft buttons in 2001 on the Mornington Peninsula - an hour from Melbourne. As their product range grew so did Buttonworks and 2 of Liz and Mike's daughter's Keli and Liza, have since joined the business.
The Buttonworks product range developed from a love of Australian timbers, to include souvenirs, gifts and jewellery featuring natural and urban icons, native flowers, birds and animals.
With a focus on sustainability, their products are designed to be compact, lightweight and safe to send overseas. Each item is designed to be purposeful and uniquely Australian, whilst upholding the natural integrity of the sustainably sourced materials they use. All of their design, manufacturing and assembly is done in their studio across the bay from Melbourne, on the Mornington Peninsula.
Their registration with the Australian Made Campaign allows for each of their products to carry the Australian Made logo. They use several Australian timbers to make their products, including Mountain Ash, Jarrah, Blackwood, Myrtle and Kwila.
As a timber craft business, it is crucial to them to uphold the integrity of the materials we use. Each tree is different, our products reflect this.
Common questions about our Buttonworks products -
What happens if liquid is spilled on our products?
All of their timbers have been sealed and varnished, which helps protect them from water marking or staining. We recommend the occasional application of a vegetable oil to help protect the timber.
Who designs their products?
Buttonworks does! Like ours, their business is special because it is owned and operated as a family business. Buttonworks prides themselves on designing and making their products.
Are Buttonworks products really made and designed in Australia?
Yes! Buttonworks is owned and operated as a family business, and all Buttonworks products are 100% made in Australia. Everything is cut, assembled and packaged in their home studio on the Mornington Peninsula, near Melbourne. They always endeavour to use Australian materials and source recycled and local materials wherever possible. Buttonworks is registered with the Australian Made, Australian Grown Campaign, and is licensed to use the Australian Made logo on their products.
What timbers do they use?
Buttonworks uses several different Australian timbers, including Mountain Ash, Jarrah, Blackwood, Myrtle and Kwila. Your order could consist of any one of these. It is important to remember that the same timber can vary from tree to tree in grain, texture and colour.
Do they use veneers?
Yes, Buttonworks uses timber veneers and not solid timber as this extends the use of the tree. Their timbers are sourced from Australian suppliers who invest in new growth plantations. Wherever possible they ensure the timbers used are Australian and are processed in a sustainable manner. They are careful not to use materials in the core of the veneers that have a high content of formaldehyde in the adhesives or glues. With
